Avoid providing your social security number when filling out lease applications.

It’s that time of year again!  Semesters are starting in the coming weeks at Universities across the nation, and students are figuring out where to live to be ready for the new term.  Those that are living off campus will likely be filling out lease applications, some for the first time in their lives.

Take some advice from realtor.com, and avoid putting your social security number on applications.1 This is a great tip for avoiding identity theft.  It is not required for credit checks, but be careful, landlords are allowed to reject your application if it’s not there.2  When in doubt – ask, and be sure to explain your identity and privacy concerns.
